The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
