Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Between Rock Fans

Marking 20 years since the legendary game first launched in North America, offering everyday gamers the tools to become a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to follow on-screen cues moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

Harmonix had already experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists featured, introducing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, remembers the initial budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the cost was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get bands like the Who – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game took off, and record sales and radio play were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish group one featured act included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as outdated material, however once it got featured on the game young people discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the band's debut album was still not available in the US, so the game served as a primary platform of discovery for the band during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Music's heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band greater revenue than any of their records. It moved more than 500,000 units in its first week, while sales of Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era as the industry faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. This track is difficult even in expert mode, let alone performed at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I recall the record label informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it risked eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for automobiles, clothes or video games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators believed there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, except for a short-lived revival several years later.

Games such as Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community alive, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist for future fans.”
